Every year at the turn of October and November, many Hindus around the world celebrates Deepavali. As the most important Indian festival, this unique celebration has a great impact on Hindu communities in India and worldwide due to its rich traditions and history. Billions of lights set up in homes and on the streets of Indian cities commemorate the victory of good over evil and darkness. Thanks to the vibrant Indian community, Singapore can also experience this fantastic festival and witness its beautiful traditional celebrations. Places like Little India will sparkle with bazaars and markets. For an entire week, you will be able to enjoy beautiful parades, dances and celebrations, marked with colours, lights and, last but not least, delicious Deepavali food in Singapore.

A tasty Deepavali

Deepavali is the time to give up on rigid diets or exercise routine. Five days of celebrations in Singapore is definitely worth trying delicious traditional Deepavali sweets. Candies and cakes like kaju roll, ras malai, burfi, laddoo and many others are especially common during festivities. Most of these sweets are made from pieces of dry fruits but there is a lot more behind it! As Singapore is a multicultural place, many Indian restaurants put a twist on traditional Deepavali specialties, introducing sweets with new flavours, just like chocolate or green tea.

What sweets should you try during Deepavali?

From a wide range of sweets available in Singapore, these are our most favourite ones we recommend you try:

  • Ladoo: Ladoo or Laddu are eaten usually during Hindu holidays and celebrations. They are prepared from chickpea flour, semolina or coconut flour and ghee (a type of butter), spices, dried fruit, and formed into a ball shape. Some restaurants in Singapore have also introduced new variations of these traditional sweet balls, just like chocolate and hazelnut ladoo.
  • Kaju roll: it is another traditional Indian sweet. Kaju rolls are made with cashew fudge (‘’kaju’’ means ‘’cashew’’), wrapped around pistachios and cardamom filling. Other ingredients include ghee and syrup.
  • Gulab Jamun are small balls made of khoya (a kind of cheese), fried in deep oil and then soaked in aromatic, sweet syrup with the addition of cardamom, saffron and rose water. Gulab Jamun is one of the most popular Indian desserts. It is served on various occasions such as weddings, birthday parties or Indian holidays like Deepavali. The word ‘’Gulab’’ is of Persian origin and means ‘’water flower’’. ‘’Jamun’’ refers to an Indian fruit that resembles Gulab Jamun in shape.
  • Ras malai is a dessert of Bengali origin, popular in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is made of chhena cheese and most often appears on some special occasions and holidays. It has got a fresh and delicate flavour.
