Why is the Mid-Autumn Festival so unique?

The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated by a great variety of Asian countries and it is the second most important Chinese festival after the Lunar New Year. Its rich traditions have more than a thousand of years. We associate it with mooncakes, lanterns, rabbits… However, the Mid-Autumn Festival and its traditions are not that simple as we might think they are. Its celebrations vary alongside countries and regions which makes it even more exciting.

How far is Hong Kong different from Singapore?

As many people in Singapore are of Chinese descent, the Mid-Autumn traditions are similar to the Chinese ones, especially to Guangdong and Fujian provinces. The streets in Singapore shine with lanterns’ lights just like in Hong Kong, people appreciate the beauty of moonlight and send mooncakes to each other to show care and love. Children play with lanterns and ask for sweets. However, the Singapore’s love for durian has made it a part of the Mid-Autumn celebrations. The durian-filled mooncake is a Singaporean specialty, rarely seen in other parts of Asia.

Hong Kong’s has also got some unique Mid-Autumn Festival traditions. The most outstanding one is definitely the stunning Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance which originated in the 19th century. Once performed by Tai Hang villagers to protect their homes from bad luck, it has become one of the most remarkable Hong Kong’s traditions.

What to be aware of?

As gifting is an important part of both Hong Kong and Singaporean Mid-Autumn traditions, one should be aware of the gifting etiquette of both cities. They have similar customs, yet sometimes there may be some differences. In general, giving gifts without wrapping is considered rude. Also, best wrapping colors are gold and red. White and blue should be avoided as they are usually related to mourning. Gifts should always be given with both hands and the recipient should not open them immediately to avoid being seen as greedy. What is more, presenting someone with knives, umbrellas, green hats and clocks may be seen as a bad luck for cultural reasons. However, one should also be aware of not presenting someone with shoes in Hong Kong. In Cantonese, the word for shoes is homophonic with the that one for ‘’rough’’.

What gifts are appreciated?

Think about something you would like to receive yourself: a nice flower bouquet, a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates or a fruit hamper? Choose something elegant and of a good style. It is also good to send a thank you card. All of these things may seem quite overwhelming, yet we may help you with your choice. We are aware of cultural nuances and we want you to choose the best.
