What’s on in Little India during Deepavali?

As the third largest ethnic and cultural community in Singapore, the Indians are an intrinsic part of the city’s history and traditions. Their appearance in Singapore marked the very beginning of Singapore as a city in the 19th century. Places like Little India, a unique Indian district of Singapore, still keeps its original Indian character since its development in the 19th century. Set up as a cattle trading place in 1840, the Little India developed into one of the most vibrant districts of Singapore with a dazzling mix of Indian and Chinese traditions.

Little India is known for its various Hindu, Christian and Muslim temples, delicious food, good shopping places and joyful celebrations of Indian festivals. Things to do in Little India during Deepavali

Deepavali is a traditional Hindu festival with over 2500 years of history. It is also called ‘’The Festival of Lights’’ and symbolizes the victory of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. • Do some shopping: beautiful decorations such as flower garlands and colourful bazaars are enough reason to visit Little India during that special festival. It can be said that during Deepavali the district turns into a shopping heaven. We recommend strolling down the colourful streets, searching for snacks and traditional Deepavali outfits. The especially popular ones are sari, a type of embroidered womenswear, typical for Deepavali. In addition, you can also buy home decorations, candles and many, many others. We also recommend visiting the Mustafa centre, the 24-hour shopping mall. You can find there almost everything, starting from jewellery and finishing with groceries and household appliances.
  • Search for food: for snacks, we recommend popping into Deepavali Festival Village, a beautiful bazaar full of traditional Indian food. You can find, among others, traditional sweet doughnuts called ‘’athirasam’’ and ‘’murukku’’, a special kind of savoury twists.
  • Join the Silver Chair procession and other traditional events: interested in more spiritual side of Deepavali? We recommend going for the Silver Chair procession organised by Hindu devotees. It will take place twice and starts in the Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown and finishes in Little India. Moreover, a week before the big day of Deepavali the Sri Mariamman Temple will organise a traditional Theemithi spectacle, an unusual traditional performance when thousands of men will walk on burning charcoal to praise the goddess Draupadi.
