Hari Raya Puasa is known for its distinctive traditions and stunningly colourful celebrations. At Gift Hampers Singapore, we would love to share this special time with you and we have drawn up some amazing activities and unique rituals for you to look forward to.

What is Hari Raya Puasa?

First of all, let’s understand what the festival encompasses. Hari Raya Puasa is a festival that marks the end of Ramadan, a holy fasting month for Muslims. It is a particularly special time for fellow Muslims all around the globe. This year, it takes place on June 5th, and people are already preparing for the joyous celebrations and lavish feasts.

During this time, celebrators of this festival seek forgiveness and togetherness. For those who are not in the Muslim community, there may be some confusion between Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji. Both are fairly close together, and both commence with Muslims congregating at mosques to pray and listen to sermons together, but there are some significant differences between these two events.

The Differences between Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji

  • Hari Raya Puasa is a holiday celebrated at the end of Ramadan for a total of 30 days, whereas Hari Raya Haji occurs 70 days after Ramadan and is celebrated for up to four days.
  • In the days leading up to Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims are compelled to fast every day for 30 days. Muslims only need to fast for one day on the eve of Hari Raya Haji, and it is not compulsory.
  • At Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims visit their relatives and friends for a wholesome feast, following the morning prayers. You will see that in Singapore, Muslims wear brand new colourful traditional clothes. Females wear the Baju Kurung while males wear the Baju Melayu. In contrast, livestock such as sheep, goats and cows are sacrificed after prayer during Hari Raja Haji.
  • In terms of food, at Hari Raya Puasa in Singapore, Muslims feast on traditional festival foods such as sambal goreng (a crispy fried red shallots and chilli dish), rendang (a spicy meat dish) and lontong (rice cake). Hari Raya Haji takes on a different turn by donating the meat of the sacrificed livestock to those in need.
